Creating a Safe Space to Play

Oil and Mix Media on Canvas, 40x45 cm. Sold to Private Collection.

This work is exploring queer experiences related to a delayed childhood. Many LGBTQ+ people experience a childhood with strict guidelines on what is acceptable and what is not based on hetero/cis gender roles. In this piece, the artist is allowing themselves to play with their mothers make-up as a way of nurturing their inner child. This sense of play extends to the application of paint as it takes a fauvist approach, contrasting the subtly shifting skin tones. Giving the impression the artist and their younger self were in conversation to create this self portrait.

Exhibited at Kilkenny Arts Festival 2022.

What is Beautiful is Good, and Who is Good will Soon be Beautiful, Charcoal on Fabriano, 30x40cm.

A Gender Dysphoric Delusion

A self-portrait where their sleep demon is depicted with its head sculpted in bedclothes. This scene documents behavioural developments stemming from stress and anxiety, resulting in bouts of insomnia. Leaving the artist questioning their gender expression and identity in a state of exhaustion.
